A Summary Of “industrial Society And Its Future”
This book is also called the Unabomber Manifesto. Watching the development of Facebook heighten the narcissism of tens of millions of people, turning them into mini-reality TV versions of themselves, I would bet he knows, with even more certainty, that he was onto something. Well, Kaczynski, while reprehensible for murdering and maiming people, was precisely correct in many of his ideas. He saw these “leftists” as psychologically disordered—seeking to compensate for deep feelings of personal disempowerment by banding together and seeking extraordinary means of control in society. Objections to these findings have been raised, but the objections are feeble and seem to be ideologically motivated. In any event, no one denies that children tend on the average to hold social attitudes similar to those of their parents. From our point of view it doesn’t matter all that much whether the attitudes are passed on genetically or through childhood training. Its focus will be on technology and economics, not politics. On the more sophisticated level the ideology should address itself to people who are intelligent, thoughtful and rational. The object should be to create a core of people who will be opposed to the industrial system on a rational, thought-out basis, with full appreciation of the problems and ambiguities involved, and of the price that has to be paid for getting rid of the system.
All the Unabomber accomplished was a lifelong stay in prison, the death of three people, and the injury of dozens more. By your strong metric, neither approach is successful. By a weaker metric, an organized campaign that doesn’t include bombing people is partially successful. The tranquility he’s describing would, I imagine, guide one to understand that you can’t control other people’s actions. And even if the wilderness around him was shrinking, he still had plenty of it.
The worst technology can do is exacerbate existing patterns of social domination. This should be fairly evident that it didn’t take much technology for the British to cut down their entire forests, enslaved half the world, and then used all this power to kick-start the industrial revolution. The dribble against ‘collectivist’ anti-freedom loving leftist who are mostly feminist, ‘gayist’ , and political correctist was no deeper than what one could read on any of the alt-right blogs today. The leftist won’t stop at just putting labels on cigarettes or eliminating spanking they want to take away all of our freedoms he will claim.
But primitive man did relatively little damage to nature because the COLLECTIVE power of primitive society was negligible compared to the COLLECTIVE power of industrial society. In this article we give attention to only some of the negative developments that have grown out of the industrial-technological system. Other such developments we mention only briefly or ignore altogether. This does not mean that we regard these other developments as unimportant. For practical reasons we have to confine our discussion to areas that have received insufficient public attention or in which we have something new to say.
I was intrigued by “Industrial Society and its Future” by Ted Kaczynski after watching the “Manhunt” series on Netflix. As a techno-optimist it helped me put my feet on the ground. The US need fear no other country, it’s probably the most secure nation in history right now. Unfortunately the necessity argument is what keeps defense research and spending high in the US and around the world.
